Balter are a contemporary folk quartet who have emerged from the music scene in Newcastle. Breaking free from traditional forms, Balter create through composed sets of traditional and original melodies and songs. The interplay between two fiddles, mandolin and accordion explores new textures and harmonic possibilities; gelled together with intricate arrangements.

Since forming in 2015, Balter have toured the UK and performed at festivals such as Beverley Folk Festival and Rauland Internasjonale Vinterfestival (Norway). They were finalists in Hands Up for Trad’s Battle of the Folk Bands, and received a Highly Recommended award at the Danny Kyle open stage at Celtic Connections.

They have released 2 EPs in 2017 and 2018, and in February 2020 released a new single and music video, ‘Erica’s’, which was widely received and resulted in a sold out home town gig. Erica’s also received a nomination at the Scots Trad Music Awards for Video of the Year.
